Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the start of your child’s school education. We believe that each and every child is special. We provide all the children with the best opportunities to develop in a warm, exciting, stimulating, secure environment.  We incorporate a sense of fun and enjoyment with a friendly atmosphere. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we aim to provide a safe, happy and caring environment where children find learning an enjoyable experience.  We ensure that all children feel secure, included and valued and are given opportunities and encouragement to build positive relationships with adults and each other.

The Foundation Stage provides a wide range of activities and experiences that enrich the overall development of each child.  We provide opportunities for teaching and learning both indoors and outdoors through careful planning and a combination of child initiated and adult-led activities and experiences. Planning is based around children’s interests and loose seasonal topics.  We incorporate a sense of fun and enjoyment with a friendly atmosphere.

Teaching and learning is carried out following three characteristics:

playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’

active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements

creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

The well-planned activities provide opportunities to develop all their skills in the three prime areas.  These areas are crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The four specific areas enable the three prime areas to be strengthened and applied:

  • Literacy - Phonics Programme Letters and Sounds (Supported with ReadWriteInc resources)
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children are assessed throughout their time in Foundation, through observations, questioning and direct teaching. They are given the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through investigation and exploration. A learning journey is developed for each child using written observations, photographic evidence and examples of children’s work.

We believe that each and every child is special and that they only experience childhood once.  They deserve the best experiences and opportunities.  We ensure that they receive the best, by working in partnership with their families and the community.  We aim to maintain high standards in all aspects of our work.  We hope you and your child’s contact with the Foundation Stage will be a happy and positive experience. We will do all we can to ensure that your childs individual needs are met.
